Alishia Williams and Sophie Hemi Holloway hard at work during their maths lesson last week. It is always a pleasure popping into our syndicate classes and seeing all of the neat things going on.

Maths is pumping in Turanganui. Some of our year 8's have just finished a very successful series of Mako Maths lessons with the lovely Mrs Barclay. Mrs Barclay said these students were outstanding ambassadors and worked extremely hard during every session. We can't wait to do our end of term testing to see how much we have all improved.

Tuakana - Teina Buddy Reading
Last week Koka Sam trained up the room 22 Tekau ma Rua leaders to help run our Buddy Reading programme in room 23. Each morning our leaders will spend 15 minutes assisting Koka Sam by listening and reading to to her awesome students Mason, Rosie, Leah, and Sonny.

Tekau Ma Rua Trip to Wellington

Thank you to all of our whanau and friends, Turanga Health, Turanga Ararau and The Sugar Kitchen who helped our syndicate leaders get to Wellington to watch the All Blacks vs Wales game last weekend. We had a fantastic time away and look forward to more awesome leadership opportunities throughout the remainder of the year. Next term we are going to have a big focus on giving back to the community and will be expanding our group. The highlight of the trip was definitely meeting the All Blacks at the end of the game.

March for Moko

Tomorrow some of our students will be representing Gisint at the March for Moko hikoi from Marina Park to the Gisborne Courthouse. Your child would've brought a permission form home on Friday if they are attending. Unfortunately Whakatane Exchange students are not able to come as they have a final powhiri practise at 9am with Papa Pura. We are proud to be able to support this important kaupapa.

Thank you

Nga mihi nui ki a Matua Josh Wharehinga for coming in to speak to our year 8's last week regarding the great migration. Our staff and students were very privileged to hear this korero and learnt a lot during the hour long session. The year 7's look forward to listening to Matua Josh in the near future and congratulate him on his appointment to our Board of Trustees. Please let us know if you have skills that you would love to share with our tamariki. Our focus for next term is on Kaitiakitanga - Guardianship and we are very keen to head out into the community. If you would like to contribute to this kaupapa please make contact with one of us. This unit will tie in beautifully with the science fair and our syndicate will be doing some very cool science rotations from the beginning of term 3.

MiE Tairawhiti vs MiE Hawkes Bay

Please come along to Rugby Park this Friday night at 6pm to support our Tairawhiti teachers who are taking on the Hawkes Bay MiE (Men in Education) teachers. Our very own Matua Walter, Matua Puri and Matua Bruce will be joining forces with Mr Udall, Mr Hart, Mr Barclay and a number of other teachers from our district. It is bound to be an entertaining evening...possibly even more entertaining than the All Black grand final! Come and cheer along our Gizzy Int teachers and Mr Hart and Mr Udall!

Please check back throughout the week as we will be having more information come out regarding next week's cross country, our final green card event for the term and other panui and updates.  There will also be a whanau consultation survey coming home in the near future. We would love to hear your suggestions on how we can make Gisint even better for your child.

Last Wednesday we farewelled our beautiful Koka Kat who is only a couple of weeks away from welcoming her third child. We all love Koka Kat and will miss her immensely but we are sure she will come and visit us lots. We had a delicious shared lunch on Friday for Koka Kat's last day - Thank you to everyone for the delicious kai.
Thanks Koka Kat for everything xx

Finally, all of our Turanganui whanau wish Oliver Lodewyk and his Mum Rachel a safe journey to Boston and back so Oliver can meet with specialists. Our thoughts will be with both of you and of course James, Hugo and Adam back here at home. Thank you very much to our school community who raised over $1200 for Oliver's trip through our recent mufti day and donut sales. Oli and his whanau appreciate everyone's generous support.

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Week 7 is here!

Good evening everyone,

We hope you enjoyed the weekend with whanau and friends and celebrated the first All Black win of the season. Twenty five of our Turanganui leaders alongside our Turanganui teachers are heading to Wellington after school this Friday for the second All Black match against Wales so keep an eye out on the telly next Saturday night. We will be seated down the goal end closest to the entrance to Westpac Stadium and will blacked out to support our AB's.

Celebrating Turanganui Success
There are so many wonderful children in our syndicate who have been achieving success across different realms. We are very proud of them all.

Contribution Badges

Well done to the following students who have earned their contribution badges for service to the community and school. We look forward to the next wave of Turanganui Taonga receiving this acknowledgement. Students must contribute to six different tasks to be eligible. It is wonderful seeing our students proudly wearing their badges around the school.

19 - Alyssa Herbert, Jade Vercoe
20 - Matariki Kaa - Absent when presented

21 - Nathania Takitaki, Rossleigh Wharehinga, Manaia Haenga, Celeste Akuhata-Raeina

Aroha Noa - Kindness Competition

Well done to Alani Dunn, Waylon Uatuku, Kaea Rennie and Jacob Wyllie who won the best dance at the Aroha Noa competition held at the War Memorial last Wednesday. We had a group of around 30 students accompany Matua Puri, Matua Walter and Koka Kat to support our boys and they were lucky enough to meet Laura Thompson a.k.a Victoria from Shortland Street. Our boys once again graced the front cover of the Gisborne Herald on Saturday night but were accidentally listed as attending Ilminster. Well done for your creativity, commitment, teamwork and contribution to this competition boys!

Chess Competition

Congratulations to Oliver Lodewyk, Amelia Pasikala and Anna Manuel for representing Gisint at the local chess competition held at Te Wananga o Aotearoa last Thursday. Amelia and Anna were 2nd and 3rd placed girls and Amelia received special acknowledgement from our librarian Mrs Cal Robinson for stepping up and thanking the organisers on behalf of our school. Mrs Robinson said the whole day was a pleasure and all of our children made her very proud.

Students of the Week

Well done to Hayley and Nathania who received the Yr 7 and Yr 8 student of the week awards at assembly. Tau ke korua!

Our Heroes

Well done to Nik Patumaka and Daniel Lee for putting out a fire at school in the weekend.  Our boys were walking their dog and came across a small fire outside the office. They stomped it out and then alerted their whanau who were able to send a fire engine to school to check that everything was safe. Mr Udall and all of the Turanganui teachers are very proud of you both.

Ruma Rua Tekau Poetry

Room 20 have been completing some outstanding poetry based on their Maunga, Awa and Marae and they will be sharing and teaching the rest of our team how to construct these very special poems. Here are two awesome poems by Irie Eyles and Montana Te Kani-Williams entitled 'I do not have a dusty marae'.

Speeches
Congratulations to all Turanganui Taonga who have said their speech to date. Every class will be finalising these over the next two days in preparation for our syndicate finals on Thursday morning at 9am in the hall. Room 22 started last week and every student who spoke did a wonderful job. We will announce our syndicate finalists on Tuesday and whanau are welcome to come into the hall on Thursday morning to listen.

Our latest Mathletics champs will be celebrated tomorrow...We have so many awesome mathletes working hard to make our team leaderboard and we have a couple of very exciting results to verify before publishing. Every Turanganui teacher has reported a huge improvement in basic facts knowledge which is fantastic as this is the foundation necessary to set us up for further learning.

Please keep encouraging your children to access their Mathletics accounts at home as the students who are regularly doing so are thriving!

Have a wonderful week everyone and please remember to email or pop in if you have any queries.
